Baby moon? Traveling During Pregnancy Must Knows!
Traveling During Pregnancy: Tips for a Safe, Comfortable, and Memorable Trip
Whether you’re planning a relaxing beach vacation, a weekend getaway, or traveling to visit family, pregnancy doesn’t necessarily mean putting your travel plans on hold. With a little preparation and guidance from your healthcare provider, many expecting moms can safely enjoy traveling throughout pregnancy.
At Seaside Imaging of Florida, we know pregnancy is an exciting journey, and making memories before your little one arrives is something to cherish. Here are our top tips for traveling safely while expecting.
Is It Safe to Travel During Pregnancy?
For most healthy pregnancies, travel is considered safe, especially during the second trimester (14–28 weeks). Many moms find this to be the most comfortable time to travel because morning sickness has usually improved, energy levels are higher, and mobility is easier than in the third trimester.
If you have a high-risk pregnancy or pregnancy complications, talk with your healthcare provider before making travel plans.
Tips for Traveling While Pregnant
Stay Hydrated
Dehydration can contribute to headaches, fatigue, and contractions. Carry a reusable water bottle and drink plenty of water throughout your trip, especially if you’re flying or spending time outdoors in the summer heat.
Move Around Often
Whether you’re driving or flying, avoid sitting for long periods.
Stop every 1–2 hours during road trips to stretch your legs.
On flights, stand up and walk the aisle every hour or two when it’s safe.
Simple ankle circles and calf stretches can also help improve circulation.
Wear Your Seatbelt Correctly
Always wear your seatbelt while riding in a vehicle.
Position the lap belt low across your hips and below your baby bump.
Place the shoulder strap between your breasts and to the side of your belly.
Pack Healthy Snacks
Traveling can make it difficult to find nutritious food when you need it. Keep healthy snacks nearby, such as:
Fresh fruit
Trail mix
Granola bars
Crackers
String cheese
Nuts
Eating small, frequent meals may also help reduce nausea.
Dress Comfortably
Choose loose-fitting clothing and supportive shoes. Compression socks may be helpful during long flights or car rides to promote circulation and reduce leg swelling.
Know Where Medical Care Is Available
Before traveling, locate the nearest hospital or healthcare facility, especially if you’ll be visiting a new city or another country. It’s always reassuring to know where to go if you need medical attention.
Flying While Pregnant
Most airlines allow pregnant passengers to fly through much of pregnancy, although many have restrictions later in the third trimester. Check with your airline before booking, especially if you’ll be traveling after 32–36 weeks.
When flying:
Book an aisle seat if possible.
Stay hydrated.
Walk periodically during the flight.
Avoid lifting heavy luggage whenever possible.
Road Trip Tips for Expecting Moms
Road trips can be a wonderful way to enjoy a babymoon or family vacation.
Remember to:
Plan frequent restroom and stretching breaks.
Bring extra pillows for back support.
Keep water and snacks within easy reach.
Avoid driving while overly tired.
Should You Travel Late in Pregnancy?
As your due date approaches, travel becomes less predictable. Many healthcare providers recommend limiting long-distance travel during the final weeks of pregnancy because labor can begin unexpectedly. Always discuss your travel plans with your provider if you’re in your third trimester.
Make the Memories Last
