Can Babies Hear During an Ultrasound?
As a high-risk OB sonographer, I get asked this question often. If you’ve ever wondered, “Can my baby hear the ultrasound?”, you’re not alone! At Seaside Imaging of Fl, we love helping families understand what happens during an elective ultrasound while creating unforgettable bonding experiences with their little one.
Can Babies Hear the Ultrasound?
The short answer is no - at least not in the way we hear sound.
Ultrasound technology uses high frequency sound waves that are far above the range of human hearing. {Think dog whistle} These sound waves bounce off your baby’s body to create the beautiful 2D, 3D, 4D, and HD images you see during your ultrasound session. While your baby may sense tiny vibrations created by the ultrasound, they are not hearing the ultrasound machine like they hear your voice or music.
At What Gestational Age Can Babies Hear Voices?
Babies can begin to hear and respond to voices in between 19 and 25 weeks of pregnancy, with the ability to recognize and react to mom’s voice more consistently in between 32 and 34 weeks. Fetal auditory nerves begin to develop very early in pregnancy, but by 25 weeks the auditory system is mature enough for the baby to detect external sounds, including mom’s voice transmitted through the amniotic fluid and maternal tissues.
Is Ultrasound Safe for My Baby?
Diagnostic and elective ultrasounds have been used safely for decades when performed by trained professionals who follow established safety guidelines. This is why it’s so, so important to find a 3D / 4D / HDlive ultrasound studio that employs registered and trained sonographers. Our sonographer is not only ARDMS registered in obstetrics, she also has 10+ years of training in OB offices and MFM (high-risk) OB.
At Seaside Imaging of Florida, we follow ALARA standards, which means we are dedicated to providing you with the highest-quality imaging, but also performing each exam with your baby’s safety and well being our number one priority.
What Can My Baby Hear in the Womb?
Although babies can’t hear the ultrasound itself, they can hear many other sounds during pregnancy, especially later in the second trimester and throughout the third trimester.
Your baby may recognize:
Mom’s voice
Dad’s voice
Siblings talking
Music
Mom’s heartbeat
Everyday outside sounds
In fact, newborns often recognize familiar voices and sounds that they heard before birth. I can’t even count how many times I’ve seen babies react to mom/dad’s voices on the inside of the womb while watching them on HDlive using ultrasound. We can see all sorts of cute faces such as: smiles, eyes opening and closing and grimaces.
Why Choose Elective Ultrasound?
Elective ultrasounds give families the opportunity to:
Bond with their baby before birth
Watch adorable movements and facial expressions
See baby smile, yawn, stretch, or such their fists and fingers
Learn baby’s gender (if desired and gestational age allows)
Share the experience with family and friends
Take home treasured keepsake images and videos.
These moments become memories that families cherish for years to come.
