Today’s freaky fact might make you say “Wait…WHAT?!”
Babies Drink Amniotic Fluid…And Yep, Some of It Is Their Pee!
As pregnancy progresses, your baby regularly swallows amniotic fluid. And later in pregnancy, much of that fluid is made up of — you guessed it — your baby’s urine!
But before you get grossed out, this is a completely normal and important part of fetal development.
Your baby swallows amniotic fluid, absorbs it through the digestive system, and the kidneys filter fluid and produce urine, which is released right back into the amniotic sac. The fluid is constantly being circulated and renewed.
Why Do Babies Swallow Amniotic Fluid?
Swallowing amniotic fluid actually serves an important purpose. It helps your baby practice swallowing and supports the normal development of the digestive system. Amniotic fluid also plays an important role in fetal movement and lung development.
So while saying “babies drink their own pee” sounds pretty freaky, what’s really happening is an amazing little recycling system that is part of normal development inside the womb. 💙

From hiccups and stretches to swallowing amniotic fluid, there is so much happening inside the womb that parents never get to see.
That’s one of the most amazing things about ultrasound — getting a little window into your baby’s world and catching some of those adorable moments before birth.
