Freaky Friday: Your Baby BLINKS Inside the Womb!

It’s Freaky Friday at Seaside Imaging of Florida, and today’s pregnancy fact might have you looking at your next ultrasound a little differently.

Did you know babies actually open their eyes and BLINK before they're born?

Yep! Those sweet little eyes aren't closed for the entire pregnancy. By the third trimester, your baby is beginning to open and close their eyes — and may even blink while hanging out inside the womb!

When Does a Baby Open Their Eyes in the Womb?

For much of early pregnancy, your baby's eyelids remain closed while the eyes continue developing underneath them.

Around 27–28 weeks of pregnancy, the eyelids begin to open. By approximately 30 weeks, babies may be able to open their eyes more widely.

And here's where it gets really cool…

They can blink, too!

Fetal blinking and eyelid movements have been observed with ultrasound, and blinking tends to become more noticeable as pregnancy progresses.

Their Eyes Are Moving Before They Even Open!

Here's an even freakier fact:

Have you ever had an anatomy scan where the tech does an orbit/lens picture and the little eyeballs are moving all around?

Your baby's eyes can actually move underneath their closed eyelids before the eyelids begin opening!

Researchers have observed fetal eye movements with ultrasound much earlier in pregnancy, and rapid eye movements become more established as the nervous system develops.

So even when those little eyes appear tightly closed on an ultrasound, there may be quite a bit going on behind those eyelids!

What Is Baby Looking At?

Not much of a view in there!

The womb is obviously very different from the bright world your baby will experience after delivery, but later in pregnancy, the developing visual system can respond to changes in light.

Baby's eyes and brain are essentially getting ready for the much brighter world waiting outside.

Can You See a Baby Blink on Ultrasound?

Sometimes you can!

With the right fetal position and a little bit of luck, eyelid movements may be visible during ultrasound. On 3D and 4D ultrasound, especially later in pregnancy, you may even catch your baby opening and closing their eyes along with other adorable facial movements.

Of course, babies don't perform on command. They may spend your entire ultrasound snoozing, facing the wrong direction, hiding behind their hands or simply refusing to show us those little eyes.

That's part of the fun — you never know what they're going to do!

Another Amazing Peek Into Life Before Birth

Long before you get to look into your baby's eyes for the first time, those eyes are already developing, moving, opening and even blinking inside the womb.

Pregnancy is seriously incredible. 💜🩵
