👻 FREAKY FRI-YAY: Why Does Your Baby Look Like the Ghostface Mask on Ultrasound?!

The Spooky Ultrasound Image That's Actually Super Important!

It's almost Halloween, and we've got the PERFECT ultrasound image for this week's Freaky Fri-YAY!

Have you ever seen an ultrasound image of a baby's face that looks like it belongs in a scary movie?

You know the one…

Two dark, hollow-looking eyes, a strange-looking nose, and a face that resembles the mask from Scream!

Before you start wondering whether your baby is planning to haunt the nursery, we promise there's a perfectly normal explanation!

And here's the REALLY interesting part…

That spooky-looking view can provide important information during a diagnostic ultrasound!

💀 Meet the Fetal Coronal Face View!

During a detailed fetal anatomy ultrasound, sonographers examine the baby's face from several different angles.

One of those angles is called the coronal plane, which allows us to look at facial structures from the front.

Depending on the exact imaging level, ultrasound settings, and the baby's position, the eye sockets can appear dark and hollow, giving the face a rather skeletal appearance.

Add a little ultrasound shadowing, and suddenly your sweet little pumpkin looks ready for a Halloween movie!

But there's a reason we take these images.

Why Is This Spooky View So Important?

During a diagnostic fetal anatomy examination, evaluating the face helps us assess several important structures.

The Eyes and Orbits

We examine the fetal orbits, which are the bony spaces containing the eyes. This helps us assess their presence, appearance, positioning, and spacing.

The Nose and Nasal Structures

Different views of the fetal face allow us to evaluate the nose and surrounding anatomy. The coronal plane may help assess the nostrils and nasal region, depending on the imaging level.

The Upper Lip

A coronal view through the upper lip is especially important when evaluating for a possible cleft lip.

A cleft lip occurs when the tissues forming the upper lip do not completely join during fetal development.

Ultrasound can help identify some facial clefts before birth, although not all clefts are detectable, and additional imaging may be needed.

The Overall Facial Anatomy

By combining coronal, axial, and sagittal views, we can evaluate different aspects of facial development and look for findings that may require further assessment.

And here's something important to remember: one single image doesn't tell the whole story! A complete diagnostic evaluation involves multiple views and careful assessment of the anatomy.

Does a Spooky Face Mean Something Is Wrong?

Absolutely not!

A skeletal-looking face on ultrasound is often simply the result of the imaging plane and the way ultrasound waves interact with fetal anatomy.

Those dark eye sockets and unusual shadows are not, by themselves, signs of a problem.

It's also important to remember that diagnostic ultrasound images aren't intended to look like photographs.

Different imaging techniques show different structures, and sometimes the most medically useful pictures aren't exactly the cutest!

That's why we save those adorable 3D and HD Live baby portraits for another moment!

From Spooky to Sweet!

One minute, your little one looks like they're auditioning for a Halloween movie…

And the next, they're showing off the sweetest little nose, chubby cheeks, and precious pout in 3D!

That's one of the things we love most about ultrasound. Every image tells us something different.

Some images help us evaluate important anatomy, while others give families beautiful memories to treasure.

And sometimes… they give us the perfect excuse for a Freaky Fri-YAY! 👻
