Diagnostic vs. Non-Diagnostic Ultrasounds: What’s the Difference?
At Seaside Imaging of Florida, ultrasound is at the heart of what we do. But did you know that not every ultrasound serves the same purpose?
We offer both diagnostic OB ultrasounds and non-diagnostic elective ultrasounds, and while both allow us to see your sweet baby, they have very different purposes.
Diagnostic OB Ultrasounds
A diagnostic ultrasound is a medical examination performed to evaluate your pregnancy and provide information to your healthcare provider.
Depending on the exam ordered, diagnostic OB ultrasound may evaluate things such as fetal growth and measurements, fetal position, amniotic fluid, placental location, fetal anatomy, and other aspects of the pregnancy.
At Seaside Imaging of Florida, our diagnostic OB ultrasound examinations are interpreted by board-certified Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) physicians. This means your images and measurements receive physician interpretation by specialists with advanced expertise in pregnancy and fetal imaging.
Diagnostic examinations generally require an order or referral from your healthcare provider, and the results are provided to the referring provider for appropriate medical follow-up.
Our goal is to offer local families and healthcare providers convenient access to high-quality OB imaging in a comfortable, welcoming environment (yes, bring your kids and family…heck bring the neighborhood!) We also offer low and honest diagnostic imaging fees so patients can avoid having to take out a whole mortgage to pay for the anatomy scan. insert eyeroll
Non-Diagnostic / Elective Ultrasounds
Our non-diagnostic ultrasounds are all about the experience and connection.
These are the fun visits where families can relax, watch their baby move, see those adorable little features in 2D, 3D, 4D, and HD Live, and create memories to treasure long after pregnancy is over.
Depending on the package and stage of pregnancy, your elective experience may include keepsake images and videos, listening to baby's heartbeat, gender viewing, HD images, and other special keepsakes.
Because these sessions are non-diagnostic, they are not intended to diagnose medical conditions or replace the ultrasounds and prenatal care recommended by your OB, midwife, or other healthcare provider.
Think of it this way:
Diagnostic ultrasound = medical imaging and physician interpretation.
Non-diagnostic ultrasound = bonding, keepsakes, and experiencing your baby in a special way. 💙
