It sounds a little freaky, but it's actually one of the coolest things you can see during an OB ultrasound!

While your baby isn't breathing air inside the womb, they can make fetal breathing movements—rhythmic movements of the diaphragm and chest that look remarkably similar to breathing. These movements are one of the many fascinating things that can be observed during pregnancy ultrasound imaging.

👀 What Does It Look Like on an Ultrasound?

During an ultrasound, you may see your baby's chest gently moving in and out, almost as if they're taking tiny breaths.

Your baby is surrounded by amniotic fluid, and oxygen isn't coming through their lungs yet. Instead, oxygen is delivered through the placenta and umbilical cord.

Those adorable little “practice breaths” are part of your baby's development as they prepare for life outside the womb.

And honestly… watching your baby practice breathing on the ultrasound screen is pretty amazing!
