Is Ultrasound Safe for My Baby? Understanding the Safety of Prenatal Ultrasound

"Is ultrasound safe for my baby?"

Ultrasound has been used during pregnancy for more than 60 years and has an excellent safety record when performed by trained professionals.‍ ‍Our sonographer is ARDMS registered in OB/GYN and has many years of experience in both general OB/GYN practices and MFM or “high risk Obstetrics”.

At Seaside Imaging FL, we understand that your baby's health and safety are your top priorities. That's why we're committed to providing a comfortable, enjoyable ultrasound experience while following established safety guidelines.

Of note: Trained medical sonographers have to pass an ultrasound physics registry through the ARDMS before they can obtain registries in other areas (ie: OB/abdomen/vascular). This ensures that every sonographer that is properly registered through the ARDMS has a solid understanding of how ultrasound works in order to efficiently and safely perform ultrasounds.

It is important to note that 3D keepsake imaging does not replace diagnostic scans performed by your OB provider. Our studio is owned by a licensed sonographer, but this studio does not perform diagnostic exams. All scans performed at Seaside Imaging of Florida are for entertainment purposes only and should not replace regular prenatal care.

How Does Ultrasound Work?

Unlike X-rays or CT scans, ultrasound does not use radiation. Instead, it uses high-frequency sound waves that bounce off your baby and surrounding tissues to create images. These sound waves are completely different from ionizing radiation and have been extensively studied for decades.

The ultrasound machine sends sound waves into the body, and a computer converts the returning echoes into the beautiful images you see on the screen.

What Do Medical Experts Say?

Major medical organizations, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), consider ultrasound safe when used appropriately by trained professionals.

Millions of ultrasounds are performed worldwide every year, and research has not shown any harmful effects on babies when ultrasound is performed according to recommended guidelines.

Are 3D and 4D Ultrasounds Safe?

Yes. Many parents wonder whether 3D, 4D, and HD ultrasound are different from traditional 2D ultrasound.

The good news is that they all use the same sound wave technology. The difference is simply how the computer processes the information to create the images. A 3D ultrasound creates a still three-dimensional image, while a 4D ultrasound shows movement in real time.

Because they use the same ultrasound technology, 3D and 4D imaging are considered safe when performed by qualified professionals.

Why Do We Follow Safety Guidelines?

At Seaside Imaging FL, we follow the principle of ALARA, which stands for "As Low As Reasonably Achievable." This means we use the lowest ultrasound settings necessary to obtain beautiful images of your baby.

Our goal is always to provide a memorable bonding experience while maintaining the highest standards of safety and professionalism.

The Benefits of Prenatal Ultrasound

Ultrasound allows families to:

  • See their baby before birth

  • Watch movements, stretches, and expressions

  • Hear the heartbeat

  • Learn their baby's gender (when desired)

  • Share special moments with family and friends

  • Create lasting memories during pregnancy

Many parents describe seeing their baby for the first time as one of the most meaningful moments of their pregnancy journey.

Peace of Mind for Growing Families
