What’s the difference between 2D, 3D, 4D and HD ultrasound?

Pregnancy is filled with unforgettable moments, and one of the most exciting experiences for expecting parents is seeing their baby before birth. Thanks to modern ultrasound technology, families now have several imaging options available - including 2D, 3D, 4D and HD ultrasound.

In my OB clinic, one of the most commonly asked questions by our patients is “Can you do HD ultrasound? What’s the difference between this ultrasound and a 3D ultrasound?” The answer is: Yes! As an MFM sonographer, I can definitely do all of the above. However, 2D imaging is WAY better for most diagnostic exams, and due to timing and patients that are scheduled back to back for diagnostic purposes, many times the honest answer is…we just don’t have time for the fun stuff. :( The good news is, we can do all the fun stuff at Seaside Imaging, and I’m going to outline the differences in all of the different types of ultrasound below.

Let’s start with the basics: What is 2D ultraosund?

2D ultrasound is the traditional ultrasound that you often see when you go to your OB for a routine appointment. This type of ultrasound creates flat images of your baby and it’s commonly used throughout pregnancy for anatomy scans, growth scans, dating scans, to check for fetal heart tones, etc. This type of ultrasound allows the sonographer to obtain views of all of your baby including his/her growing organs. A trained sonographer will use 2D to quite literally look at your baby from head to toe to make sure everything is where and growing as it should be. There’s no-one in this world that knows human anatomy like an OB sonographer (ha!)

While 2D is incredibly important medically, the images can be frustrating for the untrained eye to interpret. In fact, one of the things we hear most commonly from patients is “how do you know what you are looking at”? I like to tell my patients that 2D ultrasound is like abstract art….it takes a while, but once you “see” it, you can’t unsee it! 2D is AMAZING to capture the bottom of baby feet and those sweet little profiles though…..and is perfect for gestational ages less than 28 weeks! (before your baby gets some chub on those cheeks).

What is 3D ultrasound?

Now we are getting to the fun stuff! In a 3D ultrasound, the machine takes multiple 2D images and combines them to create a three-dimensional image of your baby. This allows parents to see a real-time version of what they expect to see when looking at a baby face. (Not those scary face shots you get in 2D…ha!) This type of imaging is perfect for babies older than 28 weeks because at this time, you can really start to see some of his/her baby like features. Ulike traditional flat imaging, 3D ultrasound provides depth and realism, creating beautiful still images families love to share with friends and family. Many parents choose 3D imaging because it allows them to connect with their baby on another level. There’s nothing like knowing whether or not your little Jellyfish has dad’s nose or moms! We do use 3D for diagnostic purposes sometimes, especially in high-risk OB, but usually for anomalies that would present on the outside of the baby, such as facial or limb anomalies.

What is 4D ultrasound?

This is a question we get asked multiple times a week. 4D ultrasound is exactly the same as 3D ultrasound, only we are watching the baby move and wiggle in real-time (kind of like a video recorder on the inside). Instead of just capturing one still image, you can actually watch your baby on the inside! They do all sorts of cute baby things in there like: yawn, stretch, smile, hiccup, drink the amniotic fluid, and even cry! For many families, 4D ultrasound becomes one of the most unforgettable moments of pregnancy because it allows them to experience baby’s personality before birth. It’s also an amazing opportunity for siblings and grandparents to feel connected during the pregnancy.

What is HD or HDLive ultrasound

HD ultrasound (sometimes called HDLive) is the newest generation of elective ultrasound imaging. This advanced technology uses enhanced lighting and shadowing to create incredibly realistic images of your baby. The results often appear softer, more detailed, and more lifelike than standard 3D imaging. HD ultrasound can beautifully highlight: facial contours, tiny expressions, fingers and toes, baby’s overall appearance. Many parents say HD imaging gives them their clearest look at what baby may actually look like at birth.

What is this new 8K stuff?

As an MFM or high-risk OB sonographer, the 8K stuff is new to me too, but I am SO excited to offer this at Seaside Imaging! It’s a digitally enhanced image created from a 3D or HD ultrasound photo. Special editing software and AI technology are used to add realistic skin tones, detail, and lifelike features to your baby’s ultrasound image. It’s important to know that 8K imaging is not a medical ultrasound or a real-life scan performed during your appointment. Instead, it is an artistic enhancement created from images captured during your elective ultrasound session. The images are sent off to another facility where they will edit the image and send it back to us for your enjoyment. We will have some more example 8K images on the blog soon with more details!
